Most applicants pick between PTE and IELTS the way they pick a restaurant: by what friends recommend. That is why so many end up retaking. This blog gives you a simple rule for choosing the test that fits your profile, and explains why old PTE score charts can mislead you.
The rules changed that changed last year
PTE Academic kept its name, but the scoring thresholds did not stay the same. Under the old system, Superior English meant 79 in each PTE component. Under the current system, the requirement varies by skill.
For tests taken on or after that date, Superior English on PTE Academic requires:
- Listening: 69
- Reading: 70
- Writing: 85
- Speaking: 88
For IELTS (Academic or General Training), Superior English is 8 in each component.
If a blog, coaching centre or WhatsApp group quotes “79 each” without mentioning a test date, treat it with caution. Tests taken before 7 August 2025 fall under a separate table, and their results stay usable only for a limited period, depending on the visa.
Why the points matter more than the pass
Competent English is generally the entry requirement for points-tested skilled visas and earns no points. Proficient English adds 10 points. Superior English adds 20. In competitive invitation rounds, those points can change how long you wait.
For IELTS, Proficient is 7 in each component. For PTE Academic, Proficient is also set per component under the new system.
The rule that decides everything: your weakest component
Every component must meet the threshold. There is no averaging. A strong overall result would not help if one skill falls short, which is why so many applicants retake a test they were “almost” ready for.
So don’t ask which test is easier. Ask which test gives your weakest skill the best chance.
- If speaking under pressure worries you: PTE Academic is computer-scored, so you speak to a microphone. IELTS speaking is a face to face conversation with an examiner, which some candidates find natural and others find stressful.
- If you write well in a structured, human-readable way: IELTS may reward that. If your writing is clear but your typing speed or formatting is uneven, PTE’s task types deserve a serious mock test.
- If you struggle with time pressure: PTE is a single computer session with tightly timed tasks. IELTS spreads across sections, with speaking often on a separate slot.
Neither test is universally easier. That is the point of the exercise.
A 5 step process to choose in one weekend
- Take one full mock of each test. Use official or provider-approved practice material, under timed conditions.
- List your four component scores for each. Compare them against the Superior and Proficient thresholds, not against an overall score.
- Find your gap. Which single component is furthest from your target on each test?
- Pick the test where that gap is smallest or easiest to close. If gaps are similar, choose the format you found less stressful.
- Book only after that. Then prepare for the specific task types that hold you back, not for “English” in general.
Check the fine print before you book
Two details catch people out.
Test format and location. Home Affairs does not accept fully online, at home tests. Book a secure test centre and confirm your booking is the version approved for Australian visa purposes. For TOEFL iBT, you must register under the Australia pathway.
Validity. Results are generally valid for 2 years before your visa application, and older-format results follow a separate validity rule. If you plan to lodge in a couple of years, your test date matters.
IELTS results that include a One Skill Retake are accepted for eligible visas, but check your visa page first.

What to do next
Before you spend on coaching or a test booking, sit one mock of each test this week and record your four component scores. If one component falls short of your target, work out whether the other test handles it better before you commit.
You don’t have to make that call alone. Book a free 1:1 session with our team and we will:
- Review your mock results against your points profile
- Identify your weakest component and which test suits it better
- Map out a realistic preparation plan for the test you choose
If you decide to train, Veritas ProEdge, our PTE and IELTS training arm, offers professional coaching built around your specific gaps, so you prepare for the tasks that hold you back instead of studying “English” in general. The session does not commit you to anything.
